Product Description

This Beatnik Wooden Hands Surfboard Rack is a unique wall rack made to show off your board with flare. When attached to the wall, the rack rests with its palms up as if it's a real pair of hands holding your board. Inspired by the styles of the Beat Generation movement from the 1950s, this rack is as much a piece of artwork as it is a functional board rack.

This rack is designed to hold your surfboard in the palms of the hands with the fingertips showing in front of the board. One of the fingertips on each hand has a small peg that prevents your surfboard from slippig off of the rack. The hands also have a strip of padding in the center to protect and support your board's rail.

Because the hands have a versatile curved shape, this rack can be used to hold a lot more than just surfboards. Use it to store items like fishing poles, paddles, or even artwork!

This wooden hands rack comes as a set of 2 hands with mounting hardware. If you like this style rack, but need one that fits your large stand up paddle board, check out the Beatnik Wooden Hands SUP Rack, the big brother to this beatnik wooden rack for surfboards.

  • Distance from base (on the wall) to fingertips: about 9 inches
  • Distance from peg to the back of the hand (where the board rests): about 4 inches
  • Width of palm:  4 inches
  • Width of fingers: 3.25 inches
Q:
I have a 9 foot, 4 1/2 inch thick long board/SUP, will this rack hold that thickness? Do you have it in a lighter wood color as well?

A:
These wooden hands are meant for surfboards, as they are not big enough to hold a SUP. For your stand-up paddle board, you would need need the larger wooden hands. As for the wood for the surfboard or the SUP racks, they are only available as shown.

Q:
Would this hold an 8ft long Torq surfboard....Dimensions - 8’0” x 22” x 3”?

A:
The wooden surf hands might not be large enough for your particular surfboard. Unfortunately, we don't have a Torq mini-long to test out in our warehouse! But with the dimensions you listed, to be on the safe side, I would probably recommend the SUP version of the beatnik hands, instead, which have larger hands to hold your board!

Q:
My display board is 10' 6" weighing in @ 38 lbs. Will these hands safely support?

A:
Our beatnik surfboard hands could handle the length of your board, as you can set them as far apart as you need, but at 38 pounds, it is getting kind of heavy for these; there are SUP hands which are a little bigger which might work better for your surfboard, but even with those, at 38 pounds your board is starting to get too heavy for those hands. The manufacturer does not supply a weight specification or recommendation to use as a guideline for either.

For heavier boards, if you still want to go with a wood rack, we would recommend this premium wood rack one, built for larger boards, but a price jump. It is meant for larger boards and has a very good mounting system to hold them securely, and looks good. Otherwise, we tend to go with racks that are not wood for heavier boards (i.e., metal racks).

Q:
Can these be mounted outside?

A:
Our wood beatnik hands would not be a good choice for mounting outdoors, as they would be subject to wearing down from the elements over time. There are some good options for storing your board outside found here: outside surfboard racks.

Q:
Can these be mounted on stucco?

A:
It would be best to mount this wood surfboard rack into wall studs. However, if you wish to mount a surfboard rack like this into plaster/stucco, you would need to obtain specialized mounting anchors for doing so, from a hardware store, to use in addition to the mounting hardware included, so that rack can hold your board securely. You can find some tips and guidelines for installing surfboard racks here: Mounting and Installation Guidelines

Q:
Is it possible to hang the surfboard with the fins facing in or with fins facing out only?

A:
With these Beatnik Hands there isn't that much room for the fin to face the wall, instead of out; you about 5 or so inches at most where the fin would have to fit. Depending on how the particular board angles on the hands, you might have an extra couple of inches - but its not guaranteed. The SUP version of the hands is larger and there is a little more room between where the board sits and the wall -- so you might get a few more inches of space with that one, but I can't guarantee it would work much better. So mostly people remove the fins for these particular racks, though for some boards with a smaller fin you may be able to have it face the wall.

Q:
Can you keep fins attached while mounting a longboard to this?

A:
For most boards, you will need to remove the fins when storing your board on these Beatnik Hands, or have the fin face outwards (away from the wall). There isn't that much room for the fin to face the wall, you about 5 or so inches at most where the fin would have to fit so won't work for most fins. Depending on how the particular board angles on the hands, you might have an extra couple of inches - but its not guaranteed. The SUP version of the hands is larger and there is a little more room between where the board sits and the wall -- so you might get a few more inches of space with that one, but I can't guarantee it would work much better. So often people remove the fins when showing off the board on the Beatnik Hands.

Q:
Could you rest a baseball bat in them?

A:
I believe a baseball bat could work to be held inside these wooden beatnik hands; you have about a 4 inch area where the bat would sit. There is then a nub at the end of the fingers that would hold the bat in place. So how well it will work will depend on how well that bat sits in the hands and how well the hand cups it and the nub keeps the bat in place -- but it seems like it should work.

The Surfboard holders looked great, were easy to install and are very functional. They are installed outside by the pool. I would purchase them again.

Received two left hands....though they're beautiful...who has two left hands???? And these weren't cheap...almost $60. The worse part is, these were a gift for my husband's 55th birthday to store his awesome "Bud Gardner" Longboard. His actual birthday is today, so between working, dealing the aftermath and damages caused by Hurricane Matthew, I knew there wouldn't be time to return before his celebration. I had him open them prior to hurricane...his first comment was...It's two left hands...what???? So, easy to say, for this amount of money, I don't want two left hands, nor do I want the hassel of returning the item, heck we're busy repairing fencing, roofs, ceilings and walls from Matthew. Ruined the entire experience of ordering from storeyourboard.com. And, 80% of our purchases are exclusively online.
