The Kayak and Canoe Ceiling Hoist is the perfect option if you’re looking to clear up floor or wall space in your garage, shed, or boathouse. This easy-to-use ceiling lift is an entire hoist system that allows you to effortlessly store your kayak or canoe overhead. Overhead storage is one of the most underutilized storage spaces in homes, garages, and boat houses. Do yourself a favor and pick up the Kayak and Canoe Ceiling Hoist to organize and reduce your home or boathouse’s clutter!
Classic or Pro? Our popular Hi-Lift hoist is now available in both the "Classic" design as well as our new "Pro" version. Our Classic hoist comes equipped with hooks at either end to hold the tie down straps. Opt for our new Pro version and you can use custom-designed loading brackets instead of hooks. The Pro also includes a center connecting strap, perfect for kayaks, canoes, and SUPs with a tapered shape at each end. This connector piece will secure your hoist in a fixed position and make sure the load straps stay right where you need them. The Pro version also comes equipped with a 10 ft longer rope for higher ceilings.
Included in the hoist system are two mounting brackets with pulleys that attach to your ceiling, 2 heavy duty ropes that can support up to 60 lbs, a wall mounted tie-off cleat to secure the ropes when you’re not using them, high-strength straps that allow you to wrap underneath your kayak/canoe, and two hooks that connect the high-strength strap to the rope. This is a complete ceiling hoist system for your canoe or kayak!
Designed to work on ceilings up to 12 ft high, this system will work in almost any garage or shed! Since the height of the hoist is determined by how much you pull the rope through the pulleys, you can set your kayak’s height at whatever is most convenient for you! Your ceiling does not need to finished with drywall because this Kayak and Canoe Ceiling Hoist works just fine on open joists too! Meaning, you can attach this canoe and kayak lift system to just about any structural beam.
As an added bonus, this hoist system works great for your other organization needs too! Bikes, ladders, bags, or whatever else you can imagine work wonderfully with the Kayak and Canoe Ceiling Hoist too. So when your kayak is at your lake house or strapped to your car, the hoist can still be put to good use!
Get organized and take advantage of that unused overhead storage space!
Exclusive Patent Pending Design
Hey, guys! This is Mark with StoreYourBoard.
With me here today, I have our very popular Hi-Lift Ceiling Hoist. This is an excellent solution to get your gear up out of the way towards the ceiling with a very stress-free loading experience.
This is perfect for kayaks, paddleboards, surfboards, or any other gear you have around your house or garage that you need to get up out of the way but don’t want to lift by yourself up onto a ceiling rack.
The hoist provides a 4:1 mechanical advantage up to 90 pounds to store your gear even as heavy as your kayaks. It’s available as both a pro as well as a classic design option.
Today with me here, I have a pro version, which includes a center-connecting strap here, which is adjustable, as well as square-loading brackets for the straps. This provides a much more secure system for kayaks, canoes, or paddleboards that have a more tapered end to each side to prevent the straps from wanting to walk or wiggle each direction. It keeps it nice and secure in the center of your board or boat here.
The standard option uses the exact same ceiling hoist system. Only a hook design instead of the square brackets. Same concept using the loading straps, only allows for the quicker loading and unloading of your boat.
The system is very easy to operate. It comes with a wall tiedown cleat to wrap off and anchor down the excess rope.
Pull down straight down below the rope to release it and lower. Simply let go to the side for gravity to grab the brake again and secure your boat. Once again, pull straight down to release on both ends of the rope to lift.
The hoist comes equipped with these heavy-duty tiedown straps with protective rubber casings on the cleats here. Excellent way to handle all the weight as well as makes it very adjustable for whatever board or gear you need to hoist up into the ceiling. Even handy enough to lower this directly down onto your car in some cases in a garage. Take the straps, right under your car rack, strap your gear down. You’re ready to hit the road.
Installation is very simple. I recommend checking out our install video in the link below. Again, this is our Hi-Lift Ceiling Hoist.

I have to store my 12'6" fishing kayak diagonally across the ceiling of an outdoor patio that has a stucco finish. I don't know what is behind the stucco, whether it's plywood, etc. Assuming I need a stud finder to find the joists, does this install seem possible with this product?
The scenario you described does seem like it is going to have some issues mounting this ceiling hoist. You would definitely need to find the joists, because the Hi-Lift ceiling hoist must be mounted into those wood studs or joists. But that being said -- the diagonal set-up is not recommended. The way the rope/pulleys work, they need to be set up in a linear, straight way; having the ropes at an angle would cause them not to run through the pulleys correctly, so it just would not work, or would not work well. So that isn't recommended. If you aren't able to set it up so the the brackets were directly across from each other, due to the length of the boat not fitting that room in that direction, you would want to look at alternative ways to store the kayak.
Would this work for a roof top box?
Yes, our Kayak Hi-Lift also works for most cargo boxes/roof boxes. You can see our listing for it as a cargo box holder here: https://www.storeyourboard.com/cargo-box-ceiling-hoist-hi-lift/, but it is the same ceiling hoist and works well for those!
The lift components are well made (however, in China) and it works well once you figure out the system.
The instructions that come with it are not so good. Tiny line drawings that take a while to figure out that some of the lines are the rope. The instruction would be greatly improved with a few close up photographs of how the rope is supposed to be routed through the various pulleys and the lock mechanism and how the various parts should be oriented.
NEVER NEVER pull on just one side of the rope with anything elevated: the other side can free fall, as i found out. Especially because you will be standing under or near whatever you lifted, to let it down. The instructions do not tell you that you will be pulling on a loop of rope and you MUST pull on both sides of the loop evenly or one end of your Kayak will free fall.
If you will be using this lift with it attached to something over 10 feet above the floor, the end of the rope loop will be out of reach when the lift is down where you can hook up your kayak. My suggestion is to add a length of rope to the end of the loop so you can reach it easily when getting the straps on the kayak.
The lift works well and is well made, but the instructions are lacking significantly.
Great hoist, gets your kayak to within 6” of the ceiling and well outta the way. All parts and pieces seem to be very well made and durable, with exception to the rope, it’s starting to chafe after only five uses, but i figure this a wear item and can be easily replaced some day. Super easy install, just follow instructions or the videos.Overall I am extremely happy with the hoist and highly recommend for you!
After hoisting the kayaks all the way up it is difficult and awkward to release it to lower the boats!
We purchased two of these for storing our kayaks in our garage. Very pleased with this purchase! Easy to operate the hoist and nice having the kayaks up out of the way.
This storage device was perfect for me and the installation was very easy for one person to do. The video was very helpful too.
There is no reference to distance between the mounting brackets or a mention of what size the bolt heads are. goes way to fast and switches between the 2 models.
Once I located the proper placement in my garage, these hoists installed in very little time. They raise our kayaks off the ground high enough for me to safely walk under and have freed up valuable garage floor space.
I ordered two Kayak Ceiling Hoist Lifts; they arrived promptly and installation was fairly straightforward, with one exception. The hoist fittings are designed to run in line with the length of the kayak, but if ceiling joists are aligned with the width of the kayak, you'll need to modify the installation. I did this by adding 2X4's across the ceiling joists and attached fittings to the 2X4's.
It was super simple to install our kayak ceiling hoist with the video link on your website. Thanks for the quality engineering and low cost solution for those wishing to store their kayak out of the sun!
I have a 14.5’ kayak that weighs 57#. With my old system, it took two of us to hoist up and down. Now I can do it myself. The one negative is the instructions to install. They are pretty worthless but the video fills the gaps.
Great product! It got my kayak up and out of the way in my garage. It was easy to install. It took less than an hour and only needed just a few common tools. It makes it easy to store and access my kayak.
I have installed on a 12’ ceiling and have no problems with lifting or lowering my kayak. Works great.
I don't know that we could have got it installed with just the written instructions! Thankful for the installation video on the web site! The only information we wish we had: how far apart to put the brackets and what is the max distantance apart for them? Would also be nice to have a bracket that ran for joist going the other way. The kayak is 17 feet and had to go side to side is garage (due to high clearance for garage door) but brackets are made for front to back. Had to install a new 2x4 with rafters to secure brackets. Overall, very happy with. Now it is a one person load and unload!
I purchased two of the Kayak Ceiling Hoist Pro to store two kayaks along our garage ceiling after discovering this product while considering designing and constructing my own pulley system. Installation went smoothly, and for the cost, this system seems hard to beat. The Pro version gives one a few more inches of head clearance than the Classic version, if that is important to you.
Easy to install and use. My kayak is now nicely out of the way but still easy to access.
Compact, easy to install and easy to operate. The video was more helpful than the printed instructions. The video more clearly demonstrated how the locking mechanism is to be operated. The 4:1 mechanical advantage allows someone with less upper body strength to easily use the system.
Work great on my kayak.
Everything was excellent all the way from ordering to the delivery time to my door. I would definitely use this company.
Installed these at our vacation home and our other home. Fortunately we we have high ceilings in both garages, works perfect. Easy to operate. Easy to install. Used 2x6s to span trusses and then anchored in them. Bought case harden lags, ones supplied snapped under high torque. So many lakes, so little time.
bought it for my daughters she has not had a chance to hang it yet. It appears to be well built.
Installation was easy thanks to the video.
I’m using the lift on my Thule rooftop cargo box.
The only issue is that the cargo box is wide enough so that you cannot pull the ropes straight down to get the lock to release. So, it takes two people to operate it, with one person taking each side of the rope loop and pulling it down as close to their side of the box as possible.
Not the best setup, but if you’re careful, you can still get the box up and down safely.
I didn't use it for kayaks or stand up paddle board but it would have worked fine for both. Instead I used it to hang a 18' x 6' floating mat. The product was easy to install on open joists in the basement and the float is now up and out of the way.
Easy to install, instructions were made clearer by the several videos online. We have wide sit on top kayaks so we couldn't store as high as we wanted because the release mechanism didn't function properly. Lowering 12" worked great. We are buying two more for our 2nd home. Be sure to order the optional straps instead of hooks if you kayak is over 24 " wide.
I got this to hang my kayak up in my garage. I was able to install it easily (twice, because I miscalculated clearance the first time!) after watching the video and looking at the instructions included. I did not have to purchase any additional hardware. The only thing I didn't expect was how heavy it would still be to hoist the kayak! I reckoned the pulleys would somehow magically make the kayak light weight. They do not. This is not a fault of the design, just didn't expect it based on the video.
A friend and I installed two of the "pro" versions of this hoist last weekend, and they work great. Both ends of the kayaks raise at the same time (a previous system from another company a long time ago did not). With the "pro" version, I can hang the boats much closer to the ceiling joists, and the strap between the fore and aft pulleys looks like it will keep the straps from slipping. I also don't have sheetrock on my garage ceiling, so I dispensed with the part of the brackets that is screwed through the sheetrock to the bottom side of a joist, and just slipped the mating pieces with the top pulleys over the joist and bolted them with the hardware provided. Saved another inch or so in height.
Once installed - more pictures would be helpful - tool works as advertised and puts those kayaks out of my way till the next fishing trip.
Bought for keeping my Thule rack on ceiling in garage so i can simply hoist on and off when i need and to store it out of the way, this product works great and does the job perfectly , nice craftsmanship ... easy to install. honestly the company should charge more for this product ... highly recommend
I bought this off of Amazon for a YOLO SUP. The paper istructions we're useless to me. Fortunately the video explained how to install it. I have 2 problems. If I tighten the straps the board slips and is sideways once hoisted. Second releasing the brake is a pain because I hoist the board to the ceiling to get it out of the way. The board blocks the downward motion of the rope needed to unlock the brake. So a ladder is used. All in all not a bad solution for the money. I'll probably modify to make it a more useful solution for my situation.
The installation was straightforward and it’s nice having the kayak up and out of the way. My only issue came when I realized that I wanted to store the kayak perpendicular to the ceiling joists rather than along them. The brackets have three holes by which you can use with the hardware provided to mount the bracket to the ceiling/joist. The problem is that the length between the outer two holes is bigger than the width of the joist, so you can realistically only mount the bracket to by one piece of hardware to te joist if you’re installing it perpendicular to the joist. As such, I mistakenly installed a drywall anchor and screwed the mounting bracket to that for the second connection point for each bracket. The kayak went up fine, but when I tried bringing it down, the rope brake wouldn’t disengage and the bracket closest to the rope I was pulling on partially detached from the ceiling, tearing a chunk of drywall with it. To remedy, I installed a 2x4 on the ceiling, covering the whole and attaching the 2x4 to the joists, then attached the mounting brackets to that. Problem solved. The kayak hangs lower than I’d like, but I can still walk under it without hitting my head, so it does what I need. Overall, very pleased, even with the problem installing it.
This setup really solved a storage problem for me. Don't even bother trying to figure out your own solution. I tried and the result was awkward, uneven, difficult, maybe even dangerous, and even cost more. Storeyourboard's solution is very simple, even elegant. Works as easily as advertised. Very secure. Maybe a half-hour, 45 minutes to set up if you haven't done it before. It was even relatively inexpensive, additionally impressive since the parts were nice quality. One less headache. Everything should work this well.
Thanks for the videos - they helped convince me the installation was a fairly simple process.
Easy to install and use. Will be buying a few more soon
Works as advertised A bit complicated installing the hoist ropes Good value for money
This was easy to install and even easier to use. The price is great and can’t get any better than having my kayak above and out of the way. Awesome and could not be happier
Ordered this hoist to store my kayak in the garage over winter.
Ordering was easy, delivery was prompt and all for a good price.
Makes my storage way easier.
Would highly recommend. Not sure why I didn't buy one when I first got my kayak.
It does exactly what I'd hoped.
Tip: The brackets on the pulleys are set up to hang the kayak parallel to the ceiling joists. I mounted a square block of wood to the joists and screwed the bracket into that. That lets me hang the kayak perpendicular to the joists. I also replaced the hooks to get the kayak up a little higher.
Kayaks are big, awkward to deal with and can take up a lot of space. The storeyourboard hoist system makes it easy and takes advantage of otherwise unused storage space. Great product!
The system is ok but the instructions are worthless. Save yourself some time and watch the video before installing. The rope will work for us as we will only use it a few times a year. If you plan on using it a lot, upgrade the cheap rope as well.
My last review rated it good + but only because manual was so bad. However after the review I was contacted by their fantastic customer service and based on this I'm upgrading the review to excellent because this is one of those rare firms that will stand behind their product and assist the customer in any way they can to make it a good experience! RARE AND VALUABLE! Plus there is no other way I could store these things without this type of lift and have space left in my garage. Their competition just "isn't". Plus they seem to be eager to improve any defects. I'm now shopping the site to see what other nice stuff they have!
Seems well made enough - easy to install IF you know a couple of things!
1. VERY important to get right bracket with correct pulley and facing correct way! The carriage bolts used to connect upper pulleys with ceiling brackets lock into the brackets and pulleys using the square holes - THEREFORE - these require installation in only one particular way - lay it out on a floor before installing! Rope is fairly light but probably ok for a 60LB kayak. I would suggest getting a decent sailing rope 3/8" or something for anything heavier.
2. Manual just plain sucks. Pro version 'straps' not even pictured and they connect much differently. Use photos on this site and video for help. Video almost has it perfect but neglects to discuss the critical selection of the correct bracket and placement of it required by the carriage bolts.
3. Instead of depending on the 'locking' system to not fail - I used some old sailboat hardware to tie the rope to the wall, instead of just using the too small cleat. This way I have a backup 'lock' so in case the pulley locking system fails the boat still will not drop. You could just get a heavy eye bolt to screw into the side wall, tie the rope through the hole on it and then cleat it off.
all in all - I'd buy (and am thinking I will need another one soon) it again - best deal out there once you have the little gotchas. I have 9' ceilings in garage. You could go to 10' maybe 11' w/o issue - but anything taller will require a longer pulley rope. Also the bolts and nuts require a 10MM socket - so I would suggest getting one - it will make it easier to install using your electric screwdriver.
Good product. Just needs a longer cord, in my location it was too short to reach the floor.
Straps slid off of one kayak and wish line on the pulleys was longer as my garage has a very high ceiling. Instructions could have been more detailed.
Installed it and tried to use it to hoist a 65lb Perception Pescador Pilot (sans pedal drive). It installed easily, but hoisting the boat was very difficult. I pulled the hoist down and am storing my boat differently. I think that it might be a good hoist for a lighter load and shorter boat.
This device works great. However I feel the rope that come with it is too small. It says it's 12O lbs. capable. But can't hold that kind of weight when go to let it down. Rope is to thin and narrow to grip. I would think a 3/8 size would much better
The Kayak Hoist was easy to install and works as advertised. Good purchase
Good system to utilize elevated storage. Easy to install, works well as advertised. Very good vendor support.
Easy to install and easy to use. Construction is solid and well built.
Let me say up front I would like to have rated these hoists 5-stars, but I am concerned about the quality of the rope and pulleys. Others have cited failures of the pulleys. That concerns me enough that I have ordered new pulleys, but so far have not found rope stop-locking pulleys.
So far the system is working as described and I installed both in just a few hours, one morning to be exact. I'm still worried about the rope locking pulley, that it might split and the kayak(s) will come crashing down, damaging $5,000 worth of kayaks and vehicles parked in the garage.
The product disclaimer/warning says no one should walk under the suspended kayaks and no vehicles should be parked underneath. Not too realistic when the whole idea is to suspend them in the garage.
I received my order in about 5 days .If you take your time and follow the directions no problems. The only step I changed was mounting the in side brackets to the pulleys, before mounting the board to the ceiling. The pulleys work great ,lifting the kayak evenly and locking in place. A great purchase
The title says it all. Easy to install and works well. The bottom of your kayak will hang about 30" from the ceiling when installed on an 8' ceiling directly to drywall.
After reading many reviews, I picked this rack. I love it !!!! It's exactly what
I expected. I agree with other reviews, the straps that come with this are
useless, if you want to get your kayak very close to the ceiling. I purchased
2 adjustable straps (as other reviews recommended) and I'm very happy !!
My 75lb fishing kayak is hanging from the ceiling of my shop as I write. It hasn't fallen, so I'm calling it a success. Easy enough to put together using the instructions. My ceiling is about 13ft high, higher than the hoist is recommended for, but I just lift the kayak ends to put them in the straps and then hoist away.
I've only several kayak racks over the years, but this is absolutely one of the best. Easy install and smooth operation.
I received my hoist and installed it the same day, very easy to install and it works just great. thank you guys for your product and fast delivery.
I like this product because my kyak is up out of the way.
Good heavy duty components.
Haven't installed them yet but they look like they'll definitely do the job and at a very reasonable price.
Seems like a sturdy enough product. Pulleys and metal housings appear strong. Unfortunately what seemed like a good feature turned out to be the fly in the ointment. I use this to raise a lower my kayak (75lbs). The brake feature pinches the rope (almost like window blind principal). When it does this, the nylon rope starts to fray immediately. After only several uses I disconnected the brake to save the rope. I use a boat crank to raise, lower and lock the unit in place. Other than that this is a good unit. If it had a rubber or plastic coating on the braking unit it might help.
Wanted to put some toys up into the wasted overhead space, but really hated the idea of making them less accessible. The pulley system is SO EASY to use and makes raising/lowering a breeze and really quick!
Had to install a few more lag bolts to really anchor the pieces with a 55lb. kayak. Also doubled the belt wrap to bring the kayak closer to the ceiling and allow better car space below. Totally recommend!
After reading reviews about the Kayak straps that come with this kit I was already aware that the Kayak would hang too low on my 8' 10" ceiling. I had other straps that I used to get the kayak off the floor by 6' 2". The straps they provided in the kit were had the kayak only about 5' feet off the ground. The straps that came with the kit should be adjustable. Otherwise it seems to work good.
I was going to design my own ceiling hoist and was looking for ideas on-line but when I saw this hoist I just ordered it. It is is very well made and was easy to install even on a 10-foot ceiling. The unit is easy to use. I returned everything I had bought to the point.
This was easy to install, but with a regular height ceiling (8 feet) the kayak would have hung really low with the provided straps. I used my own straps (tie downs) that I could cinch tightly so that there is no gapping and then put the hooks through those and it works great. I have a GMC terrain and it sits just above the roof rack on my car.
I haven't actually used it yet but it seems like it will work great.
Stable and space saving. Holds two Huge kayaks securely in half the space.
I have not had time to install the hoist yet, but the components appear to be well made. The rope could probably stand to be a little sturdier, but until I install the hoist, I won't know whether that is true or not.
Wow this thing is sweet. So much more room in my garage with this installed! Gets my kayak up out of the way and it is really easy to use. Rather than trying to heave it up into some rack this hoist does all the work for me.
Works great. MAkes use of the ceiling space in my garage. Feels very secure once my kayak is up there
