Product Description

The Soft Kayak Roof Rack is a really cool rack because it is designed to work with just about every type of vehicles out there. Whether you have a car, truck, or SUV with built-in factory crossbars or you don't have any crossbars at all, this kayak roof rack can accommodate! Aside from the universality, another feature that makes this kayak rack so great is how portable and easy to use it is. With just a few minutes and NO tools, you can have your kayak road-worthy!

How this soft kayak roof rack works is fairly straight forward - effectively your kayak sits on "V" shaped foam blocks and you secure it all down with the provided tie down straps. The magic of this rack is in the specially designed foam blocks. Each foam block is cut in "V" shape to better hold your kayaks in place and to distribute the load so there are no pressure points on your boat's hull. Also, each foam block has a specialized channel cut out of the bottom that allows it to fit on round, oval, and square crossbars. If you want to use this rack on vehicles without built-in crossbars, then you simply slide the tie down straps into the foam blocks using the cutout channels. There is a non-slip rubber coating applied to the bottom of the foam blocks that prevents any unwanted movement.

Standard vs Deluxe Package - Both rack packages include everything you need to have a working kayak roof rack. The Deluxe package includes wider foam blocks and more tie down straps. The Standard package is great if you have a smaller kayak, are traveling shorter distances, or if you already have other tie downs you want to use in addition to the provided straps. The Deluxe kit is everything and then some you need to safely transport your kayak. See the "What's in the Box" section below for more details.

Fast and easy installation! With either rack package installation is fast and easy - with the included instructions you should have no issues, but if you do you can always contact StoreYourBoard's gear experts. Happy yaking!

**NOTE: This rack system does not require crossbars so if your vehicle doesn't come with factory-installed crossbars don't worry! If you would prefer to use this rack with crossbars take a look at our Detachable Roof Crossbars or the Malone VersaRail!

Q:
Can this roof rack accommodate 2 Sit On Top Kayaks?
A:
No, this soft roof rack won't work for 2 kayaks. For 2 kayaks, you would want something more like this 2-kayak roof rack.
Q:
I have a Saab with no roof racks and need something to transport a small one person open style kayak, would this work?
A:
The universal kayak carrier would work for your SAAB and your kayak, as the system works for cars with bare roofs, you will be running the tie-downs through all 4 doors (so you vehicle needs to have 4 doors). It would be a fine option, and comes complete with front & back tie-downs, to provide extra security while transporting the boat, and the blocks are a good shape for a kayak, and its very economical. Another options for bare roofs is this inflatable kayak rack.
Q:
My Nissan Maxima has a sun roof. Will this rack be ok with that?
A:
To use our soft kayak roof rack on a vehicle without existing crossbars, you will be placing the foam blocks that support the kayak directly on top of your vehicle's roof, but you should not place them on top of your sun roof. You need a minimum distance of 24" between the front and back blocks, so you may be able to judge on your vehicle if you have enough room to work around your sunroof - the blocks are 5" wide for reference.
Q:
I have a 2016 Nissan Rogue with crossbars. Will this work with my Rogue? There is a small black antenna on the roof.
A:
Our soft kayak roof rack has a universal fit for factory crossbars, so would be fine for your Nissan Rogue. As for your small black antenna, I don't think that would be a problem - looking at pictures of it, it looks like you may need to work around it some, but it should be doable. The foam blocks that the kayak sits on, on top of your crossbars, should raise it up enough, though you might want to take a look at your kayak and your crossbars, and try to picture how the kayak would sit; the foam blocks are about 4 inches tall so will raise the kayak about that much. A couple of pictures on our listing may also give you an idea how the kayak will be positioned on your vehicle, to give you an idea.
Q:
What will I actually receive if I purchase it? My car has a sun roof and no roof rack. Is it just those sponge blocks?
A:
The standard package, for smaller kayaks, has the following:

  • (2) 12" non-slip universal fit foam blocks
  • (2) 12' bow and stern tie downs with s-hooks
  • (1) 15' heavy duty tie down load straps
  • (1) storage case(1) Detailed instruction manual
The Deluxe Package, for larger kayaks, has larger foam blocks - they are 18" instead of 12"; and it includes twoextra block straps, that are 9' long, along with the 12" bow & stern tie-downs with s-hooks, the 15" heavy duty tie down load straps, the storage case & instruction manual that are in the standard package.

Q:
I don't have a roof rack. I need exactly what is shown in the pictures - the pads and tie-downs for a kayak - but also, n addition, the 2crossbars with four sponge feet that sit on the car roof. Is that available?
A:
Our Soft Kayak Rack system can be used on vehicles with or without existing crossbars. If you don't have crossbars, you place the blocks on top of the car and slide the tie downs into a channel on them. However, if you would like removable crossbars as well, there are these Versarail Removable Bars, available separately. You could use the soft kayak rack system with those removable bars, or use other kayak racks or tie-downs in conjunction with the removable bars.
Q:
I have an antenna on back of my SUV 2016 Lexus 350 sport.... will that get in the way of the kayak on top?
A:
If being used without factory crossbars, our Universal Kayak Soft Rack will only elevate your kayak by about 4 inches (that is the height of the pads the kayak will sit on). Additionally, it will need to run through all 4 doorways of the vehicle -- so in the rear, if the 4 inches won't elevate your kayak enough to clear your the antenna, it won't work for that model. So you would want to look at where you would be placing the kayak on top of your vehicle, and whether the 4 inches or so would elevate your kayak enough, for an idea of whether it could work. It is a question-mark, and we couldn't guarantee it would.
Q:
Based on the instruction manual, this does not look like it has the cross bars as shown in the picture. I have a CTS Sedan and when I place the kayak on the foam pads, they are laid laid directly on the roof, vs. the pictured with the steel bars, which is what I am looking for. Can you direct me to the correct item that is pictured?
A:
This kayak rooftop carrier is shown in one of the pictures on our the listing in use with crossbars, but it works without them as well. There is another picture that shows it in use without crossbars. For vehicles without crossbars, you simply slide the tie down straps into the foam blocks using the cutout channels (with the foam blocks directly on top of your vehicle, as you found). If you prefer to use the system with crossbars, but don't have factory ones, there are a couple of removable crossbar systems available, such as these detachable ones or this versarail bare roof system.
Q:
I have an emotion Spitfire the weight is 90 lbs. Specs state up to 70 lbs. do you have a foam that supports 90lbs or would 2 sets work?
A:
Since the pieces confirm to the shape of the kayak's hull, and for some other reasons, I can't recommend using two sets of these soft kayak racks. The extra pieces may not sit right or secure properly, so there could be some issues. I don't have another set like that with a greater weight capacity; if you were planning to use them on a bare roof, something like this removable inflatable rack might be an alternative to explore, it can hold up to 180 pounds and includes tiedowns. If you were going to use the foam system with a crossbars there are some other options.
Q:
I have a 17 ft Coleman Ram-X. Is this compatible with that model?
A:
I would not recommend that kayak set for a canoe. Due to the shape of a canoe, I would recommend you look at some blocks that are meant for those type of boats, such as these:

Those include 4 foam pads that will pressure fit over the canoe's gunwales, as it transports the boat upside down. It includes tie-downs for bow & stern as did the kayak blocks, and it is a universal system so it can work for a bare roof (as long as you have 4 doorways for the straps to run through) or it can be used on top of crossbars if you have a roof rack. It will hold boats up to 110 lbs.

Alternately, there is a system that is more expensive that works only if you have crossbars, seen here:

I would recommend either of those (the later if you have crossbars) for your canoe.

Overall the carrier is as described and works reasonably well. I was disappointed in the quality of the straps that held the carrier to the hull, these straps were difficult to tighten, but otherwise a very economical way to carry your yak.
