Product Description

Why a SUP Lock? This paddleboard lock system is a great, simple way to protect your investment ($$$$) in your SUP. We know there are times when you'd like to leave your SUP unattended - outside on the dock or pier, on your car's roof rack, behind your house, and more. This SUP lock will deter would-be thieves and give you some peace of mind while you grab a cup of coffee, pick up a few groceries, or leave your paddleboard stored in your yard.

What are the parts of the Paddleboard Lock? The Dock Locks SUP lock consists of 2 essential components:

  1. a 10 foot long resettable combination cable lock, and
  2. a Dock Locks Jaw (looks like a car key).

How does the Paddleboard Lock work? The SUP lock works like a typical cable bike lock, but since a paddleboard doesn't have a place to loop a cable lock through (like a bike frame), the system includes a unique way to affix the lock to your paddleboard, that's the Dock Locks Jaw. The Jaw is about the shape of a key. Its metal tip clamps open or shut, and clamps shut on your paddleboard in either of 2 places (leash plug or fin box, explained below). When the cable lock is threaded through the metal loop of the Jaw, the Jaw's tip (clamped shut) cannot be opened. Together, the system prevents removal of the Jaw from your SUP, and so you can't remove your paddleboard from whatever the cable is locked to.

How do I set up the SUP Lock? To lock your paddleboard, (1) clamp the Jaw to your paddleboard (leash plug or fin box), (2) thread the cable lock through the loop on the Jaw, and (3) lock the cable to something strong (a tree, your roof rack, deck or dock, etc.)

Where do I clamp the Jaw to my paddleboard? 2 options:

  1. Leash Plug: The recommended and easier option, the Jaw clamps shut around the leash plug at your paddleboard's tail. The leash plug is a sturdy part of your SUP built to withstand a lot of pressure (i.e. when you wipe out and yank your leash) so a thief can't easily pull the plug out, which would do a lot of damage to your paddleboard.
  2. Fin Box: This lock includes a third piece, a fin box adapter, that lets you attach your Locking Jaw to your SUP's center fin box, on the underside of your board. It's another strong part of your paddleboard designed to withstand a lot of force, making it another ideal spot to lock your paddleboard. The adapter itself is a small metal cleat that you slide into your fin box and tighten. Our video on this page shows the details on how to use the Fin Box adapter.

How do I lock multiple SUPs together? To lock up multiple paddleboards you can use 1 cable with multiple Jaws (add Jaws at checkout). Clamp separate Jaws to each paddleboard, thread the same cable through all the Jaws, and lock the cable to something strong. This is a practical, functional lock solution for multiple paddleboards like SUP yoga studios, paddleboard rentals, and when you have multiple SUPs on your car's roof rack. But remember, the cable lock is 10 feet long and coiled, so depending on your SUPs and setup you'll need more than 1 cable lock.

If you need ONLY an additional Jaw (no cable), get one here: Dock Locks Jaw | Locking Clamp

Paddleboard paddle lock for SUPs

Paddle Lock. New for 2016 is a paddle lock so you can lock up your paddle with your SUP. The Paddle Lock is a sold-separately aluminum piece that clasps around the circumference of your paddle's shaft. When clasped shut, 2 holes line up through which you thread the cable lock. Once threaded, the Paddle Lock can't open, so your paddle can't be removed from the cable. The diameter of the lock is wide enough for all paddles but not too wide so that it can be slipped off your paddle, and the interior of the lock is padded to protect your paddle from damage. You can buy the Paddle Lock here or add it at checkout.

  • 10 ft long cable, approximately 1 inch in diameter
  • (1) Resettable Cable Lock
  • (1) Dockslocks Jaw
  • (1) Dockslocks Cleat
  • Comes in a mesh bag

Q:
We will have a trailer with 10-12 boards in tow. What locking system would you suggest for this?

A:
These SUP dock locks would be one option for you, as you can order extra jaw sets for this system, which allow you to lock a bunch of boards together with one dock lock cable. You can order up to 4 additional jaws on that page listing, per cable, or the jaws can also be ordered separately here. You would probably want to order a couple of cables for all those boards, and with a couple of them, it would give you more options for keeping some boards locked on the trailer, while you have others in use.

Alternately, you might want to consider some locking tie-down SUP straps. They will help tie down your boards in addition to being able to secure them. They are available in various lengths, from 8 to 18 feet. You would want to measure all around your boards to get an idea of the length you need. For securing that many boards, and for more flexibility, you probably would want to get two of those strap sets.

Q:
If I use the Dockslocks system to secure my SUP in the fin channel of my board do I have to take the fin on and off every time I use the board, or can the fin and cleat be in together while the jaws are removed separately?

A:
The jaws can be removed separately. You only need to remove the fin once, so that you can install the cleat. Once the cleat is in the fin channel you can reinsert the fin and leave it there. When you go to lock your board just insert the jaw and put the cable lock through the jaws. When you are ready to paddle just take the cable lock off and release the jaws and you are good to go!

Q:
Can i lock up more than one board with a single sup lock?

A:
Yes, you can lock more than one SUP up with dock lock system, but you need to order an additional "Jaw Clamp" for each additional board, to do so. The SUP lock system itself ships with one cable and one jaw clamp to secure one board, but in the drop-down options you can order additional jaw clamps, which allow you to secure the additional boards with that same cable at the same time. The Jaw Clamps can also be ordered independently at a later time, if one needs to.

Living at the beach, we need to lock up some of our boards that are outside and for travel. This solves the problem of theft, although someone could conceivably destroy the boards in the act of stealing them.

lock works well...just have to remember to take it off the board before you paddle as if it is stepped on, it will damage the board.

The idea is great but the clip on locks do not stay on as the cord is too thin and they fall out! So now I use the cord without the clips to tie my kayaks!

The cable coil tension is very strong. The cable should be straighter or have less coil tension. Hard to manage and feed thru locking loops.

The SUP lock works well. It would be nice if the piece that fastens to the board was attached to the cable somehow. I'm afraid I will accidentally drop it in the water at some point. So far so good, ghP

I love the Dock Locks SUP lock system. My wife and I leave our boards locked up under our house now without fear. Makes grabbing them for a quick ride so much easier than when we had to lock them in our storage room. I highly recommend this locking system!
