This rooftop surfboard rack can hold up to four surfboards. It has a 50in. wide center bar, padded feet and adjustable hook mount design that will attach to most small to mid-size vehicles. Not recommended for large trucks or SUVs.
This rack, once installed is very solid and acts like a factory installed rooftop rack. It is a good option for longer distance and higher speed drives to the ocean.
I have long been a surfer but recently started kayaking. These racks were ideal for attaching to my car that had no rack system at all and I was able to add J-bar racks for my kayak to these racks. After easy assembly and initial installation, I was able to remove and re-install in very little time. I can carry my long board on one side and my kayak on the other. I would recommend these racks for anyone that has a bare roof top that doesn't want to permanently install a system.
While it was an easy and quick install, I have noticed that there is already some surface rust on the strap holes on the racks and some rust on the hardware. I had to was a rust stop on the problem areas. Stainless steel hardware should be a must especially if a surfboard with saltwater on it is being strapped to the rack. But for the price I paid for the rack I will make due for now!
I bought this rack system 10.5 years ago, and I've been using it ever since. I have a VW camper van with fiberglass pop-top in great condition, and I really didn't want to drill holes through it for gutter mounts. This system allowed me to just hook the little mounting brackets to the bottom edge of the pop-top and cinch down. I actually replaced the cinch-down straps with ratchet straps, but I used all of the other hardware from this surf rack. A few years later when we bought a wide SUP (which would not fit in this rack) and sea kayaks, I replaced the bar and bungee cord system with 66" Yakima round bars. So yes, I have modified it a bit over the years, but the brackets that allow you to connect it to your car have been in place for over 10 years. The brackets do have some rust but are structurally sound. I have been very happy with the system!
The surf racks we purchased were easy to install and are a perfect fit. They hold the boards easily and securely. Super stoked on them and would definitely recommend.
Rack works well especially going around local breaks. Use a lashing strap for freeway drives. Overal solid but strongly suggest using lashing strap to prevent rack failure.
Unfortunately it does not work on the chevy sonic. There aren't any 90 degree angles in which to secure the rack to the roof. It could be done with some modification to the rack. I feel it would reduce the integrity of the rack safety.
I wasn't sure how this was going to turn out. The other reviewer is correct that there are limited instructions but it was pretty straight forward to me how it went together. Once I got it strapped onto my car it is solid. I don't travel really far distances but I am typically going 20-40 miles to surf and haven't had any issues. One of my buddies has the wrap around strap type surf rack and this seems more secure and it also nice that you don't have the straps going through the inside of the roof of the car.
Don't know yet, haven't tried to put it together. No picture, no instructions, no nothing, just a box of parts!
